My June Reflections
The past month has been creatively inspiring and allowing me space to reimagine The Falling Company’s capacity and offerings.
I spent a week in Montréal, QC at the International Choreographer’s Retreat amongst 30 choreographers who brought diverse experiences and perspectives from around the world. We engaged in discussions on difficult topics such as, “How to create art in a world in distress,” “What does sustainability in the arts mean?” and “What is the context around your community and who are you really engaging with?” Hearing voices outside of my local community allowed me to reframe my perspective on work and what I would like to achieve with dance.
We will be implementing these teachings into future programming and events, this looks like more gatherings and truly listening and connecting with each of you. I often refer to our community as an ecosystem and my desires are for the company to be an old growth tree. We already have the deep foundation from former director, Amber Funk Barton, and I intend to tend to these roots for new growth and opportunities.
I write these reflections from our final days at our Dance Victoria Residency. The past 10 days in collaboration with Jamie Bradbury and Jared Davis have been focused on process, both in a creative sense and personal. We shared a preview of our new improvised installation, ‘Coalesce’, with a generous audience and had the opportunity to connect with viewers on the technology and process. This work will head over to the other side of the coast for our next performance at Sound Symposium in St. Johns, NL on July 17th.
I hope this warmer weather is treating you well. Let’s link up digitally, grab a tea, and spend some time getting to know one another.
I look forward to connecting soon.
Warmly,
Marissa

Dive in!
This interactive, multidisciplinary installation combines movement, sound, and visual projections from performers, Marissa Wong, Jamie Bradbury, and Jared Davis.
The installation performance explores the dynamics of cooperation and power through improvisation, followed by an interactive portion where audience members are invited to engage with the performers and equipment.
The collaborative approach challenges conventional performance hierarchy, with each performer navigating shifting roles of dominance and vulnerability. By exploring synergistic movement, visuals, and sound, the installation aims to create an immersive, thought-provoking experience examining human interaction and communication.
